Dr. Jane Mahoney Scholarship

The primary purpose is to provide scholarships to UWM students satisfying the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate student enrolled in a degree-granting program
  • Academic merit (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75)
  • First generation (neither parent earned a baccalaureate degree)
  • Graduated high school located in one of the following cities/school districts: Milwaukee, Racine, Beloit
  • Financial need (preferred but not required)

Applicants must demonstrate one of the following:

  • Significant barriers to achieving higher education, such as having been raised in apartment housing in a lower-income neighborhood, experience in foster care, living in a single-parent household, or overcoming economic hardship
  • Interest in the history, culture, and/or artistic expression of Black/African Americans
  • Service to the Black/African-American community; and/or
  • Participation in the activities of organizations that promote equity, inclusion, or justice for Black/African-Americans

For the above, students may satisfy this criterion through personal statements, history of employment or volunteer service, academic coursework, or involvement in the community, UWM, or student organizations or activities with the required focus.
