The late Gregory Mursky

Dr. Gregory Mursky was a professor in the Department of Geosciences at UWM for 32 years beginning in 1964. He focused his research on mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, and the geology of the planets and our moon. He was department chair twice and played a key role in shaping the department’s curriculum and practical application to the petroleum and mineral deposits industry. Professor Mursky had an impressive list of publications dealing with his research and several textbooks for college geology students.

Prior to his university career, Dr. Mursky was employed as a geologist and chief uranium mine geologist by Eldorado Nuclear Limited at Port Radium on Great Bear Lake in Canada where he also spent summers as the company’s exploration geologist in the Canadian Arctic.

Dr. Mursky received his BA degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, a BS (Honors) degree in geology from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada, and his Masters and Doctorate degrees from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California with specialties in mineralogy and petrology.

Impact

This scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Mursky’s first wife, Mary, who preceded him in death and is intended to assist a meritorious student pursue their scientific passion for geosciences.
