Non-Resident Tuition Relief Award
UWM may remit non-resident tuition, either in whole or in part, for students who are deserving of relief from the assessment of non-resident tuition, as permitted by Wis. Stat. §36.27(b). This application may be utilized by admitted UWM students who are not Wisconsin residents under Wis. Stat. § 36.27(1) and are seeking non-resident tuition relief.
To receive a decision about non-resident tuition relief by the start of the semester, the student must submit this application no later than seven (7) calendar days before the first day of classes. Students may apply after this deadline for the then-pending semester, but retroactive appeals relating to prior semesters will not be considered.
Information about tuition payments during the pendency of this process:
Students are required to pay their tuition charges by specific due dates each semester; otherwise, they will be assessed late fees. Three payment options are available to students who have submitted this application and are awaiting a decision regarding whether they qualify for non-resident tuition relief:
- Installment Plan: Students may pay an initial deposit and enter into a UWM credit agreement to maintain their enrollment. The initial payment is due on the first day of classes for the applicable term. Subsequent installment payments must be paid as scheduled, even if students are still awaiting an award decision. See the Office of Student Accounts website for installment plan due dates. If students are subsequently granted non-resident tuition relief and have overpaid, they will receive a refund of the overpaid amount.
- Pay the Resident Portion of Tuition Charges Only: Students may choose to pay a portion equivalent to resident tuition up front, which would eliminate the assessment of interest on the resident tuition, until a final resolution determines if any outstanding non-resident charges are the responsibility of the student.
- Pay the Full Tuition Charge (including Nonresident Portion): Students who have paid tuition, including non-resident tuition, and fees in full, who are subsequently granted non-resident tuition relief, will receive a refund of the nonresident portion of their tuition, as an overpayment.
Students who have submitted this application should wait until they receive a decision before deciding to withdraw from classes. If a student chooses to withdraw before a decision is made, the university will be unable to re-enroll the student back into the classes from which they withdrew. Students who applied before the start of classes and wish to withdraw as a result of a negative decision will not be assessed a withdrawal fee. Students who submitted an application after the start of class and wish to withdraw as a result of a negative decision will be responsible for paying the withdrawal fee, but fees paid in excess of the withdrawal fee will be refunded.
