Brookby Water Science Scholarship

Recipients must design and implement a water outreach and education plan to serve a targeted segment of the community. This project can fulfill the MS Professional Science internship requirement.

$5,000 scholarship

Eligibility Requirements
Students currently enrolled in a SFS Freshwater Sciences graduate degree program. Priority given to MS Professional Science students intending to use the project as their internship requirement.

Application Deadline
Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Scholarships will be awarded once a semester as long as funds are available. Students should apply at least one month before the start of the term in which they are seeking the scholarship; but applications can be considered during the term.

General Guidelines

  • Students should discuss their project with their faculty advisor, Liz Sutton (Outreach Program Manager), and the potential community partner.
  • Proposals should have clear objectives, be multidisciplinary in nature, and include both science and professional components. Proposals should describe an integrative learning experience, engaging you in real world work situations involving water science literacy, teamwork, communication skills, and problem solving.
  • No additional funding is available for the costs associated with completing the projects.
  • Funds will be awarded the term that the student is completing the project.
  • Students receiving the scholarship are required to give a presentation on their project at the PSM Internship Symposium that is held at the end of each term.

Selection Process

  • Submit the below application with the project proposal attached.
  • The completed application will be sent to the faculty advisor and Outreach Program Manager for pre-approval.
  • The SFS Academic Program and Curriculum Committee will review applications and select scholarship recipients.
  • Funds will be award through the UWM Scholarship Portal.

  • Community Partner/Client – Contact information (address, phone, email)
  • Faculty Advisor – Contact information (phone, email)
  • Project Title – Water science literacy topic
  • Project Summary – Briefly describe the project
  • Timeline – Include projected beginning and ending dates and total number of house. If known, list completion dates for community/educational outreach activities.
  • Project Narrative – See below

Project Narrative

  • Program Need – Include problem to be addressed and project rationale.
  • Program Description – Include curriculum plan summary, your role, and client roles.
  • Community Partners – Describe the organization and any funding provided.
  • Program Goals and Objectives – Describe both personal goals and project goals. Project objectives should address how this project will enhance science literacy in the community. Personal goals should include new skills and/or knowledge you will be acquiring through this project, and how this experience will move you forward along your career path.
  • Program Evaluation – Describe implementation assessment and how you will measure success.
  • Sustainability – Describe any implications for maintaining the program.
