School of Education Emergency Grant

School of Education students may apply for the SOE Emergency Grant to help cover educational and non-educational expenses. All SOE students are eligible, regardless of program status. Examples of circumstances for which a student may apply for the SOE Emergency Grant include but are not limited to:

  • Medical Emergencies
  • Transportation
  • Books
  • Child Care
  • Late Fees
  • Housing
  • Tuition Assistance
  • Holds on Accounts

Eligibility Criteria
Eligible students may apply once per academic year. Applications will be accepted at any point in the year. However, the grant is based on a first-come, first-serve basis. Award sizes can vary between $500-$1,000 depending on availability and need.

Recipients must meet the following criteria:

  • Current students enrolled in at least 3 credits in the School of Education.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Demonstrated emergency financial need that can be verified by a third party.
  • FAFSA filed for the term in which a grant is requested.
  • Agree to meet with an academic advisor.

If you are unsure if you meet the eligibility criteria, apply, or contact the Scholarship Coordinator, Michaela Kaiser at kaisermr@uwm.edu to discuss your situation.

Review Process
Staff review the student’s application, supporting documentation, and PAWS record to help determine eligibility. Staff may also review the student’s financial aid status to help ensure that the awarding of a grant will not require financial aid funds to be returned.

Eligible applicants will be contacted via email by the scholarship coordinator to schedule a time to discuss their circumstances and help identify potential campus and community resources to support them in their continued success at UWM. In most cases, students who are awarded a grant will receive funds within one week of approval. Funds are disbursed via the student’s PAWS account. Students who are awarded may be asked to engage in follow-up conversations to help address ongoing needs.

Due to limited resources, not every applicant will receive an award.
