Communication Department Undergraduate Student Awards

Undergraduates in the Department of Communication (majors and minors) can use this single application to apply for all of the following scholarships and awards for Spring 2024. Students must be enrolled during the Spring 2024 semester; students graduating in December 2023 or January 2024 are not eligible for consideration.

To apply:

  1. Complete the UWM general scholarship application
  2. Complete the College of Letters & Science scholarship application which entails uploading a copy of your transcript
  3. Complete the supplemental questions in the Communication Department Undergraduate Student Awards application if you wish to be considered for a research based award (marked below as (research-based))
  • Randy and Joanna Parlee Scholarship – one $1,000 scholarship given to a declared communication major with documented financial need and a minimum 3.25 UWM GPA.
  • Amelia Lucas Award – one $500 award is given to a communication graduate student or undergraduate communication major who is a junior or senior engaged in communication-related research (research-based)
  • Frank E. X. Dance Scholarship – one or two scholarships are given valued at $500 or $1,000 to a communication major with a minimum 3.25 UWM GPA. Preference is given to students engaged in communication-related research. (research-based)
  • John Paul Jones Scholarship – one or two awards are given valued at $500 or higher to communication graduate students or communication majors or minors who have reached at least junior standing. Preference is given to students engaged in communication-related research and to students with documented financial need. (research-based)
  • Communication Student Support Award – one $500 award is given to a communication major, minor or graduate student, with a preference for a student actively engaged in communication research. (research-based)

  1. Are you applying for merit-based scholarships, research-based scholarships or both? If you wish to be considered for research-based scholarships, you must provide further information in the questions below.
  2. Provide a short summary of your communication-related research project, including your objective, methodology, and any outcomes.
  3. Provide the name(s) and email addresses of the faculty member(s) from the Department of Communication you are working with for your research.
  4. Provide a budget for your research agenda or your proposed travel, indicating a total and specifying the breakdown of expenses.
