Thomas W. Hester, '74
Thomas (Tom) Hester graduated from UWM in May 1974. After taking his first two classes in Anthropology he decided to make it his major. After his sophomore year, he also began a pre-med curriculum and continued his work in the UWM Honors program. Tom found himself to be the only anthropology major in his class at the UW Medical School. After receiving his medical degree and specialty training in Psychiatry, Tom enjoyed a wonderful and challenging career in the U.S. Army and academic, state, and private sectors from Georgia to Hawai’i. Tom believes his foundation of a UWM anthropology major catalyzed his interest in the nature of humans and greatly aided his work to improve mental health systems of care.
Impact
Tom Hester is pleased to be able to establish the first scholarship program for undergraduate students pursuing a UWM Anthropology major. He hopes that this support will lead other students to benefit from learning more about the origins and social lives of humans. He feels good about giving back to the program that launched his professional career.
