The late Dr. Jeffrey R. Hayes
This fund was created by Jeffrey R. Hayes (1946-2012), professor of art history and director of the master’s degree program in liberal studies at UWM. Hayes received his BA in history from Wake Forest University in 1967, earned a master of liberal arts in the history of ideas at Johns Hopkins University, and a decade later completed his PhD in art history at the University of Maryland.
Hayes was an expert in American art and authored influential publications throughout his career. In addition, Hayes received prestigious awards and fellowships from institutions including the Smithsonian, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Philosophical Society. From 1982 until his death, Hayes taught in the art history department at UWM. He served as chair of the department from 1986 to 1996, and in 2000 he founded the master’s degree program in liberal studies.
Hayes was an exceptional scholar, teacher, colleague, and friend and profoundly impacted UWM throughout his lifetime.
