The Family of James M. Martin
The James M. Martin Memorial Scholarship Fund was initially created in 1992, following the death of a beloved and outstanding professor of physics at UWM. With this gift, the family of Professor Martin seeks to create a perpetual memorial to him.
Professor Martin taught at UWM for more than thirty years and served as Chair of the Physics Department for a portion of that time. He felt strongly that the primary job of a professor was teaching instead of research, and he chose to teach additional classes and forgo research all together. When the Engineering Department was first developed, they requested that Physics for Engineers be taught exclusively by Dr. Martin. In later years he developed the lab manual used for the optics lab.
Impact
Dr. Martin’s family supported his work and commitment to education. His wife, Gloria, and daughters, Christine, Rebecca and Sarah are very pleased to be able to create this scholarship to aid promising undergraduates in the field of Physics.
