Patricia & Richard Ehlert
Dick and Pat Ehlert met at UWM in the 1960s while Pat was an undergraduate French major and Dick was a graduate student in educational psychology. Their connection to UWM, however, covers six decades beginning in the 1950s when Pat’s sister, Kay Tallmadge, and brother-in-law, LeRoy Augustine, were earning degrees in education, and Dick’s sister, Lois Ehlert, was taking classes at UWM to qualify for a BFA at Layton School of Art. Both Kay and Augie went on to earn advanced degrees from UWM. Pat returned to UWM on a fellowship to earn a master’s degree in library science in 1970. Her nephew, Tom Augustine, received a degree in film in the 1980s, and Dick’s sister was granted an honorary doctorate in the 1990s. One of their daughters, Maggie Ehlert, also earned a master’s degree in educational psychology, and a son-in-law, Rick Eickhoff, graduated with a degree in Management and Information Systems, both in the early 2000s.
Impact
The Ehlerts strongly believe in the role public schools play in providing everyone an equal opportunity to succeed in life and in creating an informed electorate necessary to preserve our democratic way of life. This fund was established as a way of paying forward the scholarships and grants that enabled their family members to pursue their own education at UWM. Their hope is that it will help deserving students to achieve their dreams of becoming tomorrow’s public school educators.
