Mary Margaret Kasum ‘70
Dr. James Kenneth Kasum and Mary Margaret “Duffy” Kasum shared a marriage of 55 years rooted in family, education, service, and Wisconsin community life. Dr. Kasum devoted decades of his life to higher education as a mathematics, computer technology, and information management systems professor at Cardinal Stritch University and UW-Milwaukee. Known as an enthusiastic and dedicated educator, he received numerous awards and professional accolades during his career. Both institutions honored his contributions by naming him Professor Emeritus. Mary Margaret, known affectionately as “Duffy”, was Jim’s wife, longtime companion, and best friend. Together, they raised three daughters: Kelly Kasum Ressel, Kathleen “KK” Mary Kasum, and Christine Kasum Sexton. Initially a high school teacher, Duffy, similar to Jim, taught for many years at the university level. At the fall 2011 convocation in Appleton, Wisconsin, Dr. Ray Cross presented the University of Wisconsin Colleges 2011 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching to Mary Margaret “Duffy” Kasum. Duffy taught French and Spanish at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha for more than a decade.
Dr. Kasum died unexpectedly on August 25, 2025, shortly before his 82nd birthday. He is remembered as a respected scholar and educator, a grateful transplant recipient, an active volunteer, and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His life with Duffy reflected an enduring commitment to learning, service, and family.
