Margaret Ferris

Margaret Ferris

Margaret Ferris (1920-2014) received her undergraduate degree in Exceptional Education from Milwaukee State Teachers College, a predecessor school to UWM, in 1942. Influenced by her father’s hearing loss, which began in his thirties, she chose a career in deaf education. She earned a master?s degree at UW-Oshkosh in 1974 and taught the deaf until retiring in 1982 from the Oshkosh Public Schools. In 1999, she was recognized as the UWM Fox Valley Alumnus of the Year. She often stated that she taught 27 years without ever being heard!

Impact

Margaret Ferris hoped to encourage others to pursue careers in the education of the deaf and hard of hearing. She created this scholarship through a gift in her estate plan, hoping to ease the burden of educational expenses for students seeking this career path.
