Joan Callaway
Joan (deceased) established this scholarship during her lifetime to honor the memory of her husband, Rolland Callaway, a beloved professor at UWM for more than three decades. Joan maintained that his belief in the pursuit of education inspired their two daughters to earn their doctoral degrees. Created by Joan Callaway in 1993 soon after Rolland’s passing. Since then, the fund has been supported by the Callaway family in memory of Rolland and Joan (deceased 2017).
Impact
As Joan also worked at UWM in a support role, she and Roland both witnessed first-hand the tenacity and hardship experienced by students who came from local working class families. They wanted to give all students, especially graduate students, the opportunity to succeed. Joan hoped this scholarship would encourage the pursuit of professional excellence and reward leadership in the education field.
