Jeannette Seloover Johnson, a native of Milwaukee, completed her undergraduate degree in Exceptional Education – Deaf & Hard of Hearing at the University of Wisconsin-­Milwaukee in 1962. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Communicative Disorders at Northwestern University. Early in her career, she served on the faculties of the University of Southern California, Central Washington State College, and the University of New Mexico. She was in the U.S. Peace Corps as a Consultant in Audiology to the Republic of Korea. Jeannette founded two non-profit organizations and, with her own private practice, worked under contract to Indian Health Service, providing speech-language­ hearing services to Native Americans.

Jeannette was employed by the Province of British Columbia as a Hearing Consultant. Later she managed audiology clinical research at the 3M Company, St. Paul, MN. As Vice President of Corporate Regulatory Affairs, Quality, Clinical Research, and Planning at Resound Corporation, Redwood City, CA, and Sonic Innovations, Salt Lake City, UT, Jeannette contributed to the opening of European and Asian markets and participated in preparing the companies for their successful Initial Public Offerings.

R. Douglas Johnson, a native of Omaha, NE, grew up in Chicago. He earned a B.S. in Science Engineering and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering at Northwestern University. In the early years, he worked at Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL, and Battelle Memorial Institute, Richland, WA. Together with Jeannette, he joined the U.S. Peace Corps in Korea where he served at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology and the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute. For the remainder of his career years, he was employed by the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Impact

Jeannette established the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Scholarship fund with her husband of 50 years, R. Douglas Johnson. Together, they support the mission of advancing equity for women in education and providing high-quality preparation for teachers of those with hearing impairments.

Jeannette established the Jeannette Seloover Johnson ’62 and R. Douglas Johnson Fellowship fund with her husband of 58 years, R. Douglas Johnson. Together, they hope to support the financial needs of those seeking graduate education.
