Before coming to UWM, David worked in industry for sixteen years with such organizations as Airborne Instruments Corporation, Sperry Gyroscope Company and the Honeywell Corporate Research Center. David’s research interests were primarily concerned with the study of solid surfaces at an atomic and molecular level and he was instrumental in the creation of the Surface Studies Laboratory at UWM and served as its director from 1968 to 1974.
Impact
Professor Lichtman’s true passion was for his students and their success, and this gift honors that legacy. He was a charismatic and thoughtful teacher and always made time for his students. His advanced courses on the experimental aspects of new surface science techniques were always in demand, but his favorite thing to do was teach undergraduate courses and introduce students to how science affected and enriched their lives.
