Friends and Family of Dr. James Sappenfield
Dr. James Sappenfield was Professor Emeritus of English at UW-Milwaukee. He was a devoted and loyal teacher of early American literature and an administrator for over 39 years. Much of his scholarship was dedicated to Cooper, Melville and Hawthorne. He edited a three-volume edition of Irving’s Life of George Washington and several Cooper novels, including The Bravo. Dr. Sappenfield chaired the English Department three times, was an administrator in the graduate school, and served as the Interim Dean of the School of Fine Arts.
