Estate of Hilma Christine Dikander
For 28 years, Hilma “Chris” Swan Dikander was a teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), providing the city’s youngest students with a positive start to their educational careers. Born in India to missionary parents, Chris earned her Bachelor of Education degree in 1933 from Milwaukee State Teachers College, which later became UWM.
Impact
Chris established a legacy at UWM to help aspiring teachers for generations to come. Through a provision in her will, the Chris and Sven Dikander Memorial Scholarship was established in 2001. Intended for graduates of MPS or those considering a career with MPS, this scholarship has been awarded to dozens of educators.
