The Dr. Alice Gillam Scholarship celebrates the legacy of outstanding service, teaching, and research in English by Professor Alice Gillam (1944-2020). Dr. Alice Gillam was an Associate Professor Emerita and former Chair of the English Department. For 12 of her 27 years at UWM, Alice directed the Composition Program and frequently taught graduate and undergraduate courses on the history and continuing relevance of classical rhetoric. Alice additionally founded the UWM Writing Center, which today continues to serve thousands of students each year.

Not only was Alice an incredible teacher, but she was a fair, accessible and highly competent leader whose grasp of the field of Rhetoric and Composition inspired her students, as did the significant collaborative intellectual projects she undertook.

Impact

Upon Alice ‘s retirement from UWM in 2012, her English Department colleagues created the Alice Gillam Award to show their gratitude for the many years they worked alongside her. This Award honored Alice as it acknowledged students whose work exemplified Alice’s commitment to holding together the intellectual and the humane in the discipline of Rhetoric and Composition. The Dr. Alice Gillam Scholarship continues to be supported by Alice ’s husband, Charles Hays, and gifts made in memory of Alice from her family and friends.
