Brian Krogh
James “Jim” A. Krogh (1952-2023) was a lifelong learner with a deep passion for chemistry and history. Born in Racine, Jim graduated from Washington Park High School before attending Dominican College in Racine, where he earned his B.S. in Chemistry a year ahead of schedule, as part of the college’s final graduating class. He went on to receive his M.S. in Chemistry from UWM in 1980.
Jim’s love of science shaped his professional life. He began his career at PPG in Illinois, worked for Exxon in Janesville, and eventually co-founded Tomah Products with a group of colleagues. Leading the R&D department there was one of the joys of his career until the company was sold to Air Products. Jim’s sharp intellect and curiosity made him an exceptional researcher and problem solver.
Impact
Education was at the heart of who Jim was, and this scholarship would have been incredibly meaningful to him. His thirst for knowledge never waned. He was a voracious reader, particularly drawn to history, especially the Civil War and World War II. The library was one of his favorite places, where he could be found exploring new ideas and deepening his understanding of the world. Beyond his professional and intellectual pursuits, Jim had a lifelong love for sports, growing up in a sports-focused family. He enjoyed analyzing games, discussing strategies, and watching his favorite teams. He was also an avid moviegoer, with a fondness for cinema that matched his love of books.
Jim will be remembered for his brilliant mind, his love of learning, and the warmth he brought to those around him. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and in this scholarship that honors his dedication to education.
