Multiple Individuals for the Thomas M. Cheeks Scholarship

Multiple Individuals for the Thomas M. Cheeks Scholarship

Created by Milwaukee Lincoln High School Alumni and multiple individuals, this scholarship honors the legacy of Thomas M. Cheeks (1908-2001), a highly talented and beloved African-American/Black educator in the Milwaukee Public Schools. A renowned advocate for education, Cheeks also courageously broke down barriers against teachers and students resulting from racial prejudice. Cheeks influenced many generations of high-achieving Milwaukee students, including Milwaukee native and award-winning jazz singer and musician Al Jarreau (1941-2017).

Impact

The donors to this scholarship hope it will help and encourage students to become teachers who follow the example of Thomas M. Cheeks, highly valuing both teaching and learning and courageously seeking equality in educational opportunity for all.
