Deborah Hanks
The late Dr. Nicolas Papastamatiou began his career at UWM in 1968 and spent the greater part of his 28 year tenure as Chair of the Physics Department; his research included an extensive study of extended objects built from quantum fields. Professor Papastamatiou was a kind and thoughtful mentor, with a gift for encouraging promising young scientists.
Impact
Deborah Hanks, spouse of Dr. Papastamatiou, hopes to ensure that this priority and his legacy live on at UWM through the Nicolas Papastamatiou Award for graduate students studying theoretical physics.
